George Vosicky

Wilber, Neb.

BT2 (Boiler Technician, Second Class), U.S. Navy

Served from March 1951 to February 1955 aboard LST 803 during the Korean War.

Memory: "I was assigned to the LST 803, coming aboard in 1951. She took part in the amphibious landing at Inchon and salvage work behind enemy lines.

"One of my best memories was on an Easter morning in Inchon. We arose early for the sunrise service. After walking in the dark, we all sat on our helmets. When the sun came up, there were servicemen as far as you could see. What a sight.

"We later were part of Operation Big Switch, which involved the return of North Korean and Chinese to exchange for South Korean repatriates. In May 1954, we took part in Operation Passage to Freedom, which transported French and Vietnamese army units, along with Christian refugees, from northern Vietnam to Saigon.

"After I was discharged, I returned to Nebraska and went to work for Northwestern Bell, where I met my wife, Jeanene."
