The Omaha school board voted this afternoon to set a timetable for hiring a new superintendent. The board plans to make the hire by Dec. 17. Board members Justin Wayne and Marian Fey abstained in the 10-0 vote.
Choosing the new superintendent by then would assure that the current board picks the new leader for Omaha Public Schools. A new board, chosen in the November election, will be seated in January.
The new superintendent would be a permanent replacement for John Mackiel, who retires next week. Former Ralston superintendent Virginia Moon is serving as interim leader of OPS.
