The decision by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to tear up Bob Edwards' backyard last October in search of murder victim Jessica O'Grady's body could cost the county more than $5,000.

The Douglas County Board on Tuesday will be asked to approve Edwards' claim of $5,064 to avoid a potential lawsuit.

Edwards' son, Christopher Edwards, was convicted in the May 2006 killing of O'Grady, whom he had been dating.

Sheriff's investigators showed up at Bob Edwards' home on Oct. 5 with a search warrant and ground-penetrating radar. Investigators spent two days digging behind the home at 1616 N. 111th St.

Slabs of concrete were removed from beneath the deck, and a large amount of dirt was removed.

Sheriff Tim Dunning called off the search after investigators found rocks and concrete where radar indicated a mass was buried.

Dunning said Friday he had no regrets about digging up the property, even though the search proved unsuccessful.
