One of Nebraska's deepest hitting lineups dusted off the cobwebs Thursday and eventually rolled to a big victory on the opening day of the state high school softball season.
Defending Class A state champion Millard South belted a pair of three-run home runs and No. 9 hitter Kaite Goney likely earned a move up the lineup card with a double and a triple in the Patriots' 14-0, five-inning victory over Omaha Benson.
Following a three-run home run by Vicky Kinney in the first inning at Gallagher Park, Millard South needed three more innings to scratch out its next three runs. Despite giving up eight runs in the fifth, Benson has been steadily improving the past couple of seasons.
The Bunnies also returned eight starters from their team that went 18-11 in 2011.
"Their first six hitters are really good," Millard South coach Steve Kerkman said. "Their pitcher and defense up the middle also are really solid.
