COUNCIL BLUFFS - May 22 felt like ages ago to Jon Meyerring.
As a freshman making his first varsity start seven weeks ago for Council Bluffs St. Albert, Meyerring no-hit Logan-Magnolia in a six-inning victory. He walked the leadoff batter, then cruised.
Saturday evening's Iowa Class 1-A district final against the Panthers was a much different experience for the left-hander. He walked seven and hit two batters in four-plus innings. Nothing seemed to come easy.
But the most important stat - a St. Albert victory - held true in both contests. Despite a laborious 91-pitch outing, the rest of the Falcons remained steady in the field and at the plate in a 5-1 win at Chuck Wolever Field.
Next up for No. 5 St. Albert is Treynor (29-4), which advanced past Sidney 4-3 Saturday. The schools will meet in a Substate 8 final Tuesday in Treynor with a state tournament spot on the line.
"I struggled a little bit and wasn't hitting my spots," Meyerring said.
