If you see a colorful, decked-out truck with a Tiki top that's playing Calypso music, it's Nebraska's first Kona Ice truck.
Owner Lori Rewczuk rolled out the franchise earlier this month and she drives the truck around town and to special events, selling cups of freshly shaved ice. Customers then help themselves to any of the 10 flavors on the truck's self-serve dispensing system. There are about 50 other syrup flavors inside that Rewczuk can provide to customers. Prices range from $2 to $4.
"Kids love it because they can make their own concoctions," Rewczuk said. "It's a lot of fun."
Rewczuk, who was a stay-at-home mom when she recently relocated to Omaha, decided to open the franchise because her kids loved it in Kansas City, Mo., and saw none in Nebraska. Then she found out about Kona Ice's mission to give back to the community and she was "sold."
Every stop Rewczuk makes with the truck, she gives back a portion of revenue to the organization where she stops.
