A Sioux City, Iowa, credit union is closing its Council Bluffs office because of four robberies and two attempted robberies in the past four years.

A drop-off in loans at the Telco Triad Community Credit Union office, 2420 West Broadway, also is a factor in the Sept. 28 closing, CEO Kay Beyerink said Monday, but safety is the main reason.

"We just feel very lucky that no one has been hurt to this point," she said. "I guess we just felt that it was not a safe place for us to maintain operations."

The office has been open 22 years and has about 1,700 members, she said.

Beyerink said members can keep accounts and use the credit union's ATMs and telephone or online banking or the U.S. mail. Members hold about $1.5 million in loans, down from a pre-recession peak of $3.6 million, Beyerink said. "The branch was struggling to make any money the last four years.
