Some Iowa football players should consider seeking extra credit after spending the past six months studying a foreign language.
The Hawkeyes have a new offensive coordinator for the first time in 14 years, and the adjustment has gone beyond deciphering Texas native Greg Davis' twang.
The 38-year coaching veteran - most recently the coordinator at Texas for 13 years - hopes to bring some joie de vivre to Iowa's often mundane attack, meaning more no-huddle, a quicker tempo and more plays from the shotgun.
"It has been a little like learning a foreign language,'' senior quarterback James Vandenberg said. "Thinking about it was more daunting than it actually has been.
"It's definitely new terminology, but he teaches it really well.''
So far, Davis said, the transition has gone well.
"I don't think it's a factor,'' he said after last weekend's scrimmage. "If we call everything in the huddle, they won't make mental mistakes - even the younger guys.
