The progress Nebraska junior quarterback Taylor Martinez started to make this spring on his throwing mechanics continued in a recent trip to the Manning Passing Academy, Martinez's personal quarterback coach said.

"I thought Taylor did great," Steve Calhoun told Huskers Illustrated, a World-Herald partner. "One thing that he is is a competitor. With all the guys I work with, I don't want them to get caught up in trying to complete passes, but to take those movements, footwork, arm angle, and put it into motion, and he did a good job of that."

Calhoun worked at the event in Thibodaux, La., as an assistant coach for the first time, and he said he was impressed with what Martinez showed during competitions. The event has more than 1,200 young campers, and each of the college quarterbacks are given a group of 15 campers who they run through drills.

"Most of the time, probably 70 percent of the time, the college QBs are doing a lot of mentoring and helping the kids with drills," Calhoun said.
