Omaha authorities were the victims of what one police captain called "swatting."

A caller reported Tuesday morning that he had committed a horrific killing, then gave an address and a warning to responding officers.

Fifty minutes later, police determined that the call was a hoax.

Omaha Police Capt. Kerry Neumann said the call fits a "disturbing trend" that is creating problems for authorities across the nation. Callers use the Internet to call 911 operators with gruesome claims that can appear to be coming from home phone numbers of their victims. Their goal is to prompt SWAT teams to arrive with guns drawn.

The Omaha Police Criminal Investigation Bureau is working to trace Tuesday's call back to a suspect who drew authorities to a fake address near 28th and Spencer Streets. A false call is a misdemeanor offense.
