UPDATE, 8 p.m.: A divided Omaha school board on Monday night kept Freddie Gray as its president The 8-4 vote means Gray will continue as the public face of OPS, conducting meetings and serving as board spokesperson, at least through the end of the year. She is running for re-election this year in Subdistrict 2, which includes North Omaha. Her opponent is James M. English, a retired OPS teacher and administrator. Both are Democrats.

It could be a historic vote: the first time an Omaha school board president is voted out of the top spot.

Or the 12-member board could keep Freddie Gray as its president, serving out the remaining four months of her term.

The decision comes Monday night, when board members are scheduled to vote on a motion to replace Gray. It would take eight votes to remove her.

Whoever is president will be the point person for the Omaha Public Schools' second search for a superintendent.

What board members will decide, however, is unclear.
