Many people started their July Fourth fireworks shows early, but for some, the celebration ended in a trip to the hospital.

The Nebraska Medical Center had treated 20 adults for fireworks-related injuries as of Tuesday afternoon. One was admitted.

"Last year we saw 21 people the entire month of July," said Dr. Debra Reilly, the medical director of the burn unit at that hospital. "We've already seen 20 people and it's only July 3, so it's way up this year."

Three patients who visited the med center Sunday received skin grafts on Tuesday. In all three cases, the patient did not expect the fireworks to go off as soon as they did.

Creighton University Medical Center had treated one person. None of the hospitals in the Methodist and Alegent systems had seen any fireworks injuries.

In 2010, U.S. emergency rooms treated 8,600 fireworks-related injuries, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

More than 170 people had called the Omaha 911 center with fireworks complaints as of Tuesday afternoon.
