Lady Sailors rally for victory; Sutherland gets past Lady Eagles

GOTHENBURG — The second game of the evening between 19-2 Brady and 17-5 Sutherland was worth the price of admission at the D1-ll Subdistrict in Gothenburg on Tuesday.

Brady had a 25-23 lead heading into the locker room at the half, but the Lady Sailors put together a 14-3 run to begin the third quarter and advance with a 57-50 win.

"At halftime, we talked about getting our posts some more touches because they were really keying on our guards," said Sutherland coach Jason Gunderson. "We came out and were able to drive and got some good looks at our posts to get us the lead."

Mackenzie White kicked off the run with a pair of buckets in the paint. After two Morgan Simpson free throws, Kaley Stokey scored on a fastbreak.

White scored again on a Stokey assist and then Stokey took the ball coast-to-coast after a steal for two. Jalyne Schuster ended the run with a basket on a fastbreak to lead 37-28 with 4 minutes to go in the quarter.

Schuster led the Lady Sailors with a game-high 21 points. The senior became a member of the 1,000-point club as she now has 1,016 career points.

"She really helped us out in the first half," Gunderson said. "She was able to get to the rim and get some points for us. It was just a great game out of her."

Brady closed to within 41-34 heading into the final frame and when Madison Elliott scored on a 3-point play, the deficit was just four at the 5:42 mark of the fourth.

Tara Callahan grabbed a rebound and scored and Brady tied the score at 50-all when Callahan hit 1-of-2 free throws. But the Lady Eagle struggled to find the range in the final minute in taking the loss.

"We had some good looks. If we could have scored, it could have changed things," said Brady coach Lance Arterburn

"We had some chances down the stretch. Give credit to Sutherland, they did a good job converting when they had a chance and we just didn’t put the ball in the hole."

The Lady Sailors hit 6-of-10 free throws in the final minute to hold off any Brady comeback attempt. Sam Staggs was good on 3-of-4 in the final stretch.

"We take pride on our foul shooting," Gunderson said. "Sam is 90 percent on the year, so if you get her at the line, you feel pretty confident."

Brady switched up its defense in the opening half and kept Sutherland from gaining any momentum.

"We changed up our defense a little bit," Arterburn said. "We ran the box-in-one press on Schuster.

"I thought we did some good things at the beginning. Sutherland is a great team and we knew they would come back.

"But when Sutherland had the run, we lost some focus and that hurt us. That just killed us."

Elliott led the Lady Eagles with 18 points. Valerie Most also reached double figures with 10 points.
